Season overview
Bob Paisley’s final season as manager brought another First Division and League Cup double. Liverpool finished 11 points clear of Watford, with 82 points and 87 league goals. Ronnie Whelan scored the extra-time winner against Manchester United at Wembley as Liverpool won the League Cup for a third successive season.
Ian Rush led the scoring with 31 competitive goals, including four in the 5–0 league win at Everton. The Charity Shield had also been won against Tottenham. David Hodgson arrived from Middlesbrough, while David Johnson moved to Everton and Terry McDermott returned to Newcastle United.
Brighton ended Liverpool’s FA Cup run in the fifth round, and Widzew Lodz won their European Cup quarter-final 4–3 on aggregate. Liverpool went without a win in their final seven league fixtures but still finished comfortably clear at the top. Joe Fagan succeeded Paisley for the following campaign.
