Jimmy Case scored the winner against his former club as Brighton & Hove Albion knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Anfield on 20 February 1983. The 2–1 fifth-round defeat came against a side bottom of the First Division, while Liverpool led the same league.
Brighton took the lead after 32 minutes. Case released Michael Robinson, who broke forward and crossed for Gerry Ryan to finish. Liverpool trailed at the interval, and Brighton continued to offer a threat: Alan Kennedy struck a post for the home side, while Robinson headed against the bar at the other end.
Bob Paisley brought on Craig Johnston for David Hodgson in the second half. Johnston equalised following a free-kick, hooking the ball past Perry Digweed. Liverpool's recovery lasted little more than a minute. Case struck from outside the penalty area and his shot deflected off Ronnie Whelan to beat Bruce Grobbelaar.
Liverpool still had chances to force a replay. Phil Neal put a penalty wide after Tony Grealish was penalised for a challenge on Kennedy. Chris Ramsey then headed Mark Lawrenson's effort off the line as Brighton defended their lead.
The visitors, managed by former Liverpool player Jimmy Melia, reached the quarter-finals. For Paisley, who was due to retire at the end of the season, the defeat ended his final chance to win the FA Cup as Liverpool manager. It remained the major domestic trophy missing from his managerial record.
