Liverpool beat KR Reykjavík 6–1 as Anfield staged European football for the first time, with Bobby Graham scoring on his debut.
Liverpool began another season in the Second Division under Phil Taylor and finished it under Bill Shankly. Taylor resigned in November after failing to secure a return to the top flight. Shankly’s appointment was announced on 1 December 1959, although he did not arrive at Anfield until a fortnight later. His first match, at home to Cardiff City on 19 December, ended in a 4–0 defeat. A second loss at Charlton followed before a 2–0 win in the return fixture brought his first victory.
