Craig Johnston's equaliser earned Liverpool a 1–1 draw with Aston Villa on 7 May 1983, in Bob Paisley's final home league match as manager. The championship was already secure, but a farewell victory proved beyond his side.

Villa took the lead through Gary Shaw's penalty in the 12th minute and held their advantage well into the second half. With roughly a quarter of an hour remaining, Liverpool received a penalty of their own. Nigel Spink saved Phil Neal's kick, then saved again when the referee ordered a retake.

Johnston finally equalised after 82 minutes, with Kenny Dalglish providing the assist. The goal ended a run of four successive league defeats.

Paisley posed with the championship trophy on an afternoon watched by 39,939. Liverpool still had an away fixture at Watford to complete the season.
