Season overview
Liverpool recovered from 12th place after a Boxing Day home defeat by Manchester City to win the First Division under Bob Paisley. They finished four points ahead of Ipswich Town and retained the League Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3–1 after extra time with two Ronnie Whelan goals and one from Ian Rush.
Rush scored 30 competitive goals. Mark Lawrenson joined from Brighton, and Bruce Grobbelaar took over in goal after Ray Clemence moved to Tottenham. Jimmy Case also departed, followed during the season by Ray Kennedy. Away from the pitch, former manager Bill Shankly died on 29 September 1981, aged 68.
There were defeats elsewhere: Flamengo won the Intercontinental Cup meeting 3–0 in Tokyo, CSKA Sofia knocked Liverpool out of the European Cup at the quarter-final stage, and Chelsea ended the FA Cup run in the fifth round. A 3–1 league victory over Tottenham at Anfield secured the championship.
