Ian Rush scored his first Liverpool goal in a 7–0 win over Oulu Palloseura at Anfield on 30 September 1981. The European Cup holders advanced 8–0 on aggregate, but the match took place the day after Bill Shankly's death. Throughout the second half, the Kop chanted his name.
Oulu's offside trap frustrated Liverpool early on, and goalkeeper Jukka Rantanen made several saves before Kenny Dalglish headed the opening goal from the rebound of a David Johnson shot. Terry McDermott added the second before half-time.
Ray Kennedy headed in Phil Neal's cross almost immediately after the restart. Johnson made it four on the hour, before Bob Paisley introduced Rush and Mark Lawrenson in place of Johnson and Kennedy.
Rush scored in the 67th minute. Neal sent a low cross into the area, Sammy Lee let it run past him and Rush turned it into the net. Lawrenson soon joined him with a first goal of his own, exchanging passes with Graeme Souness before beating Rantanen.
McDermott completed the scoring with his second, curling a left-footed shot in from outside the penalty area. Five second-half goals had turned Liverpool's narrow first-leg advantage into an emphatic passage through the opening round. The scoreline also contained two personal landmarks for the substitutes, on an evening when the crowd's sustained tribute belonged to Shankly.
