Bruce Grobbelaar's penalty save and Craig Johnston's second-half goal gave Liverpool a 1–0 victory at Manchester United on 7 April 1982. Their sixth successive league win left Bob Paisley's side two points clear of Ipswich Town at the top of the First Division.
Liverpool arrived at Old Trafford as League Cup holders and league leaders. Ron Atkinson's United had led the table earlier in the season, but began this meeting five points behind Liverpool.
United had the chance to go ahead after eight minutes. Frank Stapleton took the penalty, but Grobbelaar saved it. Liverpool kept the score at 0–0 through the rest of the first half.
Terry McDermott replaced Graeme Souness at the interval. The decisive goal followed in the 63rd minute: Johnston scored from Ian Rush's assist to give Liverpool the lead. United made a late change of their own, bringing Ashley Grimes on for Kevin Moran, but could not equalise.
The result put Liverpool on 63 points from 32 matches. Ipswich had 61 from the same number, while United were eight points behind Liverpool.
