Ian Rush scored four times as Liverpool beat Everton 5–0 at Goodison Park on 6 November 1982. Mark Lawrenson supplied the other goal in Liverpool's biggest away victory over their neighbours.

Alan Hansen's forward passing helped establish Liverpool's command. He released Rush for the opening goal after 11 minutes, the striker beating Neville Southall with a low finish. Liverpool created further chances, but still led by only one at the interval.

Everton were already down to ten men. Glenn Keeley pulled Kenny Dalglish back as he broke through towards goal and was dismissed in the 37th minute. The home side had to play the rest of the derby without the defender.

Hansen supplied Rush again early in the second half. This time his shot took a deflection on its way past Southall. Lawrenson made it 3–0 soon afterwards, meeting Dalglish's cross after Liverpool took a quick throw-in on the right.

Rush completed his hat-trick with another run through Everton's defence. His first attempt came back off a post, but he reached the rebound and scored. Recalling the match in his 2007 Liverpool Echo column, Rush picked that goal as his favourite of the four.

There was still time for Sammy Lee to send him clear again. Rush rounded Southall and put the ball into the empty net with five minutes remaining. Liverpool had scored four times in the second half and finished the afternoon top of the First Division, two points ahead of Manchester City.
