Season overview
Liverpool finished eighth in the Premier League with 60 points. Graeme Souness left in January after Bristol City won an FA Cup third-round replay 1–0 at Anfield, and Roy Evans was appointed as his replacement. Wimbledon had already ended Liverpool’s League Cup run, winning a fourth-round replay on penalties.
Robbie Fowler scored on his first-team debut at Fulham, then scored all five goals in the return leg at Anfield. He finished his debut season with 18 competitive goals, one behind leading scorer Ian Rush. Nigel Clough, Neil Ruddock and Julian Dicks joined, while David Burrows and Mike Marsh moved to West Ham United.
The final home match, against Norwich City on 30 April, was the last played in front of the all-standing Kop before its replacement with seats. Liverpool lost 1–0, then ended the campaign with a 2–1 defeat at Aston Villa. Across the league season they won 17 games and lost 16.
