Season overview
Liverpool won the League Cup and finished fourth in the Premier League in Roy Evans’s first full season as manager. Steve McManaman scored both goals in the 2–1 final victory over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley on 2 April. Liverpool collected 74 league points, 15 behind champions Blackburn Rovers.
Robbie Fowler led the scoring with 31 competitive goals, including 25 in the league. He scored a hat-trick in the 3–0 home win over Arsenal in August. Phil Babb and John Scales arrived in September, while Bruce Grobbelaar and Ronnie Whelan left during the summer.
Tottenham ended Liverpool’s FA Cup run in the quarter-final with a 2–1 win at Anfield. The league campaign ended with Liverpool beating Blackburn 2–1 at home; Blackburn nevertheless finished top of the table. The League Cup was Liverpool’s fifth success in the competition.
