Season overview
Liverpool finished third in the Premier League with 71 points, 11 behind Manchester United, and reached the FA Cup final. United won the Wembley meeting 1–0 on 11 May. Roy Evans’s side scored 70 league goals and conceded 34.
Stan Collymore joined from Nottingham Forest and scored 19 competitive goals, while Robbie Fowler led the club’s scoring with 36, including 28 in the league. Collymore scored twice in the 4–3 home win over Newcastle United on 3 April, with his second goal arriving in stoppage time. Jason McAteer also arrived, from Bolton Wanderers.
Liverpool’s other cup runs ended before Christmas. Brøndby won their UEFA Cup second-round tie 1–0 on aggregate after a goalless first leg in Denmark. Newcastle won 1–0 at Anfield in the League Cup fourth round, ending Liverpool’s defence of the trophy.
