Season overview
Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League, seven points behind champions Manchester United. They took 68 points, the same total as Newcastle United and Arsenal, but had the lowest goal difference of the three. Roy Evans’s side also reached the Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final, losing 3–2 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain despite winning the home leg 2–0.
Robbie Fowler scored 31 competitive goals, his third consecutive season with at least 30. Patrik Berger joined from Borussia Dortmund and Bjørn Tore Kvarme arrived from Rosenborg, while Ian Rush moved to Leeds United before the campaign. Michael Owen scored on his debut in the 2–1 defeat at Wimbledon on 6 May.
Chelsea knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the fourth round with a 4–2 win, and Middlesbrough won their League Cup quarter-final 2–1. Liverpool again beat Newcastle 4–3 at Anfield, this time on 10 March, but finished the league season with a 1–1 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.
