Season overview

Liverpool finished sixth under Graeme Souness in the first Premier League season, with 59 points. They were still 15th after losing to Manchester United in early March, before improving their position during the run-in. Their final match was a 6–2 home win over Tottenham, but they won only three away league games all season.

The FA Cup defence ended in the third round when Bolton Wanderers won a replay 2–0 at Anfield. Crystal Palace knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup in the fourth round, while Spartak Moscow won their Cup Winners’ Cup second-round tie 6–2 on aggregate. Leeds United had beaten Liverpool 4–3 in the Charity Shield.

Ian Rush was leading scorer with 22 competitive goals, including one in the Shield. David James joined from Watford and Paul Stewart from Tottenham, followed by Torben Piechnik and Stig Inge Bjørnebye. Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders moved to Aston Villa, while Barry Venison left for Newcastle United.
