Liverpool’s first European match since 1985 ended in a 6–1 win over Kuusysi Lahti, although a late burst of goals transformed a much closer contest.

Season overview
Liverpool finished sixth in the First Division in Graeme Souness’s first full season, 18 points behind champions Leeds United, but won the FA Cup. Michael Thomas and Ian Rush scored in the 2–0 final victory over Sunderland. Ronnie Moran deputised during Souness’s recovery from heart surgery in the closing weeks of the campaign.
The squad changed substantially: Dean Saunders and Mark Wright arrived from Derby County, Mark Walters from Rangers and Rob Jones from Crewe. Peter Beardsley, Steve Staunton and Steve McMahon were among those who left. Saunders finished as leading scorer with 23 competitive goals, nine of them in the UEFA Cup.
Liverpool returned to European competition after six years away, opening with a 6–1 home win over Kuusysi Lahti. They overturned a 2–0 first-leg deficit against Auxerre with a 3–0 Anfield victory, but Genoa eliminated them in the quarter-finals. Peterborough United ended their League Cup run in the fourth round.
