Season overview
Liverpool won their opening eight league matches but finished second in the First Division, seven points behind Arsenal. Kenny Dalglish resigned on 22 February 1991, two days after a 4–4 FA Cup replay against Everton. Ronnie Moran took temporary charge before Graeme Souness returned from Rangers as manager in April.
Ian Rush led the scoring with 26 competitive goals. Ronny Rosenthal’s loan became a permanent move, while January arrivals included Jamie Redknapp from Bournemouth and David Speedie from Coventry City. Liverpool shared the Charity Shield with Manchester United after a 1–1 draw, but United later won their League Cup third-round tie 3–1.
Everton ended Liverpool’s FA Cup run by winning the second replay 1–0 at Goodison Park. Moran’s spell included a 7–1 league win at Derby County and a 5–4 victory at Leeds United. Liverpool finished the season with 76 points, scoring 77 league goals and conceding 40.

Notes on the record
Overview evidence: paragraph 1 — lfch-games, rsssf-league, lfc-dalglish, lfc-moran, lfc-souness and lfch-manager-dates; paragraph 2 — lfch-scorers, afv-scorer, lfch-transfers, lfc-shield and lfch-games; paragraph 3 — lfch-games, lfch-manager-dates and rsssf-league.
The official Dalglish profile says ten straight opening league wins. The fixture list gives eight, plus two League Cup victories; the official Rosenthal profile independently confirms eight. The erroneous ten-league-win claim is excluded.
Arsenal’s 83 points already include their two-point deduction. The final gap is seven. Moran’s caretaker spell is included explicitly. Redknapp is a signing, not a key player before his first-team debut.
