Season overview
Liverpool won their 18th league title under Kenny Dalglish, finishing nine points ahead of Aston Villa in the First Division. They collected 79 points and scored 78 league goals. The Charity Shield also came to Anfield after a 1–0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley.
John Barnes was leading scorer with 28 goals in all competitions, including 22 in the league, and won the football writers’ Player of the Year award. Glenn Hysén arrived from Fiorentina and John Aldridge left for Real Sociedad. Ronny Rosenthal joined on loan from Standard Liege during the spring and scored seven goals in eight league appearances.
Crystal Palace, beaten 9–0 at Anfield in September, ended Liverpool’s FA Cup defence with a 4–3 extra-time win in the semi-final at Villa Park. Arsenal had knocked Liverpool out of the League Cup in the third round. The league campaign finished with a 6–1 victory away to Coventry City.
