Liverpool completed a league double over Everton with a 2–1 victory at Anfield on 3 February 1990. John Barnes and Peter Beardsley scored before Graeme Sharp’s reply, with all three goals coming in the first half.

Barnes opened the scoring after ten minutes. Beardsley converted a penalty in the twenty-ninth minute to double the lead, but Sharp brought Everton back within a goal two minutes before half-time.

That left the visitors the second half to seek an equaliser. Colin Harvey sent on Mike Newell for Pat Nevin with fourteen minutes remaining, while Kenny Dalglish kept his starting eleven on the field. There were no further goals.

Liverpool, who had won 3–1 at Goodison Park in September, remained top of the First Division. Everton stood seventh.
