Liverpool beat Swansea City 8–0 at Anfield on 9 January 1990 to reach the FA Cup fourth round. Ian Rush scored a second-half hat-trick after John Barnes’s two goals helped establish a 3–0 lead by the interval.
The holders had been kept out at the Vetch Field three days earlier. Swansea, then in the Third Division, earned their replay with a goalless draw. Recalling that first match in 2011, goalkeeper Lee Bracey described Andy Melville clearing a Barnes effort off the line and Keith Walker hitting the crossbar near the end.
Both teams kept the same starting line-ups at Anfield, but Swansea’s resistance ended after 21 minutes when Barnes scored. Ronnie Whelan added the second five minutes before half-time, and Barnes struck again before the break.
Rush and Peter Beardsley scored in quick succession early in the second half. Two further Rush goals completed his hat-trick before Steve Nicol made it eight with four minutes remaining.
Norwich City were Liverpool’s next opponents in the competition.
