Season overview
Liverpool won the First Division and the UEFA Cup in Bob Paisley’s second season as manager. A 3–1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final league fixture secured the championship, with Liverpool finishing one point ahead of Queens Park Rangers.
John Toshack led the scoring with 23 goals in all competitions. Ray Kennedy’s move into left midfield was another important development, as the former Arsenal forward became part of the side that completed the double. Joey Jones joined from Wrexham, while Chris Lawler and Phil Boersma left during the campaign.
The UEFA Cup final brought a 4–3 aggregate victory over Club Brugge. Liverpool recovered from two goals down to win the Anfield leg 3–2, then drew 1–1 in Belgium with Kevin Keegan scoring their goal. The domestic cups ended earlier: Derby County beat Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round and Burnley won a League Cup third-round replay.
