Liverpool scored four times without reply at White Hart Lane on 13 December 1975, ending a run of four league matches without a victory. Kevin Keegan broke the deadlock shortly before half-time; Jimmy Case, Phil Neal and Steve Heighway then extended the lead after the interval.
The result followed a less productive sequence in the First Division: draws with Coventry City, Arsenal and Burnley, and a home defeat by Norwich City. Liverpool had enjoyed a more successful European evening in midweek, when Case scored all three goals against Śląsk Wrocław. At Tottenham, the goals were shared among four players.
For 42 minutes neither side scored. Keegan then put Liverpool ahead in the 43rd minute, with John Toshack supplying the assist. The visitors went into the interval a goal up against Terry Neill's side.
Tottenham changed their attack at half-time, bringing Steve Walford on for John Duncan. Liverpool kept the same eleven and doubled their lead nine minutes into the second half. Toshack was again the provider, this time for Case, whose productive week continued with another goal.
Neal made it 3–0 in the 74th minute, with Case contributing the assist. Bob Paisley then introduced David Fairclough for Peter Cormack before Heighway completed the scoring four minutes from time. Toshack was credited with his third assist of the afternoon.
The Welsh striker had not scored, but his part in three of the goals made him central to the result. Keegan, Case and Heighway had all benefited from his contribution, while Neal added another scorer to an increasingly emphatic away performance.
Liverpool finished the afternoon second in the league, level on 28 points with Queens Park Rangers, Manchester United and Derby County. Half of their 42-match programme had now been played. The four-goal victory did not separate them from a crowded leading group on points, but it ended their league wait in convincing fashion and carried their European scoring form into the domestic campaign.
