Liverpool won the league championship at Molineux on 4 May 1976, recovering from a goal down to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3–1. Kevin Keegan's equaliser with 14 minutes remaining changed the direction of the evening before John Toshack and Ray Kennedy supplied the goals which carried Liverpool past Queens Park Rangers.
Rangers had already finished their fixtures and could only wait. Liverpool's last league match fell between the two legs of the UEFA Cup final, leaving Bob Paisley's side with the opportunity to complete a double but no guarantee of either trophy. Their opponents had an urgent concern of their own: Wolves needed a victory to keep their survival hopes alive.
Steve Kindon scored after 13 minutes, giving the home side a lead they held until half-time. Liverpool had selected Toshack and Keegan in attack, with Jimmy Case also starting after his scoring contribution against Brugge six days earlier. The European comeback had not spared them another difficult evening.
Paisley introduced David Fairclough for Case on the hour. Still Wolves remained ahead, and the championship was unresolved as the match moved into its final quarter. A Liverpool defeat would leave Rangers at the top.
Keegan finally equalised in the 76th minute, with Toshack providing the assist. The goal transformed Liverpool's position, but they did not stop at a draw. Kennedy supplied Toshack for the second in the 85th minute, putting the visitors ahead for the first time. Kennedy then scored himself in the closing moments, completing a sequence in which all three scorers had contributed to one another's success.
Liverpool finished one point above Rangers. It was their ninth league title and Paisley's first as manager, achieved in his second season after succeeding Bill Shankly. For Wolves, defeat ended in relegation.
One task remained. Fifteen days later Liverpool would draw in Bruges to secure the UEFA Cup as well. At Molineux, however, the immediate achievement was domestic: a championship decided by a late recovery in the final match.
