Ian Callaghan scored twice in the final six minutes as Liverpool turned a narrow lead into a 3–0 victory at Leeds United on 26 August 1975. Ray Kennedy's first-half goal had separated the sides for almost an hour before Callaghan supplied the decisive finish to the evening.
It was Liverpool's first away win of the new First Division campaign. They had lost their opening fixture 2–0 at Queens Park Rangers and drawn 2–2 with West Ham United before beating Tottenham Hotspur 3–2 at Anfield. The visit to Elland Road brought a second successive victory, and their first league clean sheet.
Bob Paisley's starting side included Kennedy and Phil Boersma alongside Kevin Keegan, with neither John Toshack nor Steve Heighway in the matchday team. Joey Jones started in a defence completed by Phil Neal, Phil Thompson and captain Emlyn Hughes, ahead of Ray Clemence.
Kennedy opened the scoring in the 26th minute, with Keegan providing the assist. Liverpool retained that single-goal advantage through half-time and deep into the second half. Brian Hall replaced Boersma after 70 minutes, but there was still no second goal to make the result secure.
Callaghan changed that in the 84th minute. Four minutes later he scored again, this time from another Keegan assist. The late double gave Liverpool a margin which the score had not suggested for most of the match.
Callaghan and Kennedy shared all three goals, while Keegan contributed to two without scoring himself. For a Liverpool attack missing its familiar Toshack–Heighway combination, the scoring responsibilities had been successfully shared.
The result left Liverpool with five points from their opening four league matches under the two-points-for-a-win system. The season was still only ten days old, but the early defeat in London had been followed by successive wins against Tottenham and Leeds. At Elland Road, the clean sheet and Callaghan's late intervention had turned that recovery into a convincing away result.
