Kevin Keegan scored the goal which secured Liverpool's second UEFA Cup on 19 May 1976. His early equaliser in a 1–1 draw at Club Brugge preserved a 4–3 aggregate victory, completing a league and European double in Bob Paisley's second season as manager.
Liverpool arrived at the Olympic Stadium with a one-goal advantage, earned through their recovery from 2–0 down at Anfield. Ray Kennedy, Jimmy Case and Keegan had all scored in that first leg. The return required a different result: Liverpool did not have to win the match to win the trophy.
Brugge had reached the final under Ernst Happel after eliminating opponents including Ipswich Town, Roma, AC Milan and Hamburg. Liverpool's own semi-final success against Barcelona had depended on a 1–0 away victory followed by a draw at Anfield. Neither side had reached this stage without negotiating demanding two-legged ties.
The home team struck first again. Raoul Lambert converted an 11th-minute penalty, cancelling Liverpool's aggregate lead. The advantage earned in the Anfield comeback had disappeared, and another response was required.
It came four minutes later. Emlyn Hughes played a short free-kick to Keegan, who drove his shot into the net. Liverpool were level on the night and ahead across the final once more. Keegan had now scored in both legs, following his penalty on Merseyside with the goal that would settle the tie.
There was still most of the match to play. Case started alongside the familiar attacking combination of Keegan and John Toshack, with David Fairclough among the substitutes. Paisley brought Fairclough on for Toshack in the second half, but the score remained unchanged through the closing stages.
Hughes received the trophy at the end of a 1–1 draw. Liverpool had repeated their UEFA Cup success of 1973, this time under Paisley, and added European silverware to the domestic championship. Anfield's three-goal recovery had made victory possible; Keegan's swift answer in Belgium ensured that it was completed.
