Season overview
Liverpool finished runners-up to Leeds United, with their strongest league position since the 1966 championship. The defence conceded only 24 goals, fewer than any other First Division side, and Tommy Lawrence played every league match. Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith were also ever-present in the league, while Ron Yeats, Geoff Strong and Emlyn Hughes remained central to the side.
There were changes in attack. Alun Evans arrived from Wolves for £100,000 in September and scored in a 4–0 debut victory over Leicester City. A week later he scored twice as Liverpool won 6–0 at his former club. Tony Hateley moved to Coventry City that month. Roger Hunt remained the leading scorer, although his 17 goals were well below the previous season’s 30. On 1 February, his winner against Sheffield Wednesday also made him Liverpool’s record league goalscorer.
Liverpool stayed in contention for the title into April, but Leeds secured the championship with a goalless draw at Anfield on 28 April. The final gap was six points. Cup progress was limited: Leicester won an FA Cup fifth-round replay at Anfield and Arsenal ended the League Cup campaign in the fourth round. In Europe, Athletic Bilbao and Liverpool each won their home leg 2–1. With the Fairs Cup tie still level after extra time at Anfield, a coin toss put Athletic through.
The season ended without silverware, but it should not be reduced to the later decline of Shankly’s first team. Finishing second with the division’s best defensive record was a substantial achievement. At the same time, preparations for further change continued. Ray Clemence made his first competitive appearance in the League Cup, while Alec Lindsay and Larry Lloyd were bought during the spring. Neither Lindsay nor Lloyd played for the first team before the season ended; their importance belongs to what followed.

Evans scores on his debut
The new signing from Wolves scored in Liverpool’s 4–0 win over Leicester City at Anfield. He added two goals in the 6–0 win at Molineux a week later.
Clemence makes his first-team debut
Clemence kept goal in the 2–0 League Cup win over Swansea Town at Anfield. It was his only competitive appearance of the season.
A coin toss decides the European tie
Liverpool won the return leg 2–1 at Anfield, making the aggregate score 3–3. Extra time brought no further goal, and Athletic Bilbao advanced on a coin toss.
Hunt takes the league scoring record
Hunt scored the only goal against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield. His 234th league goal for Liverpool took him past Gordon Hodgson.
Leeds secure the title at Anfield
A 0–0 draw with Liverpool gave Leeds United the point that secured their first league championship. Liverpool went on to finish second.

Notes on the record
Hunt’s 17 competitive goals are independently confirmed by LFChistory and 11v11: 13 league, one FA Cup, two League Cup and one Fairs Cup goal.
The Fairs Cup tie with Athletic Bilbao was decided by a coin toss, not away goals or penalties. Both RSSSF’s match details and Athletic Club’s own historical account confirm the method.
The 1 February 1969 league scoring milestone follows Liverpool FC’s current account and LFChistory’s corrected figures. It is distinct from Hunt’s overall scoring record, set in November 1967.
Summer departures are allocated to the following season. Wilson’s May 1968 return to Preston is therefore included here. No fee is published for that move. Exact signing days for Lloyd and the precise age claimed in the official Evans profile are omitted because accounts vary.
