Season overview
Liverpool regained the league championship with much the same side that had won the FA Cup. The only substantial outside addition was reserve goalkeeper John Ogston from Aberdeen in September. Fourteen players appeared in the league and fifteen across all competitive matches. Gerry Byrne, Ian Callaghan, Tommy Lawrence, Tommy Smith and Ron Yeats played in every one of the 53 competitive games, evidence of the continuity on which Shankly’s team depended.
After a mixed opening, Liverpool moved to the top in November and stayed there. A 5–0 win over Everton in September demonstrated the attack’s quality, but the defence was just as important: only 34 league goals were conceded. Roger Hunt scored 29 of Liverpool’s 79 league goals. His two goals against Chelsea on 30 April secured a 2–1 victory and the championship, with Liverpool eventually finishing six points ahead of Leeds United.
The FA Cup defence ended immediately with a third-round defeat by Chelsea, but Liverpool reached their first European final in the Cup Winners’ Cup. They overturned first-leg deficits against Juventus and Celtic and also eliminated Standard Liège and Honvéd. Geoff Strong’s header in the 2–0 Anfield win over Celtic put them through to Hampden Park, where Borussia Dortmund won 2–1 after extra time on 5 May. Hunt equalised before Reinhard Libuda scored the winner. Hunt finished with 32 competitive goals; the season left Liverpool with a second league title in three years and another substantial European campaign.

Notes on the record
Hunt’s all-competition 32 comprises 29 league goals, one in the FA Cup and two in the Cup Winners’ Cup. The Charity Shield is counted as a competitive match, but he did not score in it.
Some summaries describe a 14-player campaign and others 15. LFChistory’s appearances table resolves this: fourteen played in the league; Phil Chisnall appeared only in Europe and brings the all-competition total to fifteen.
John Ogston’s former club Aberdeen gives 25 September 1965 and £12,000; LFChistory gives 15 September and £10,000. September, Aberdeen and the permanent move are agreed. Exact date and fee are omitted. LFC’s timeline describes him as a pre-season signing, which the detailed records do not support.
Phil Ferns’s move is dated 29 July in Play Up Liverpool, 30 July in LFChistory’s register and August in its biography. Only summer 1965 is stated; both detailed records agree on £5,000.
Bobby Thomson’s August departure is included because he provided senior full-back cover in the first two seasons after promotion. Thomas Lowry and John Sealey left in June 1966; those summer moves fall with the following season under the publishing convention and involved players with one Liverpool senior appearance each.
The Charity Shield was shared. Liverpool did not enter the League Cup, so no empty competition is displayed.
Older records can give Hunt 30 league goals or 33 overall. LFChistory’s documented correction reassigns the only goal against Tottenham on 12 March 1966 to Ted Clayton as an own goal. The corrected 29 league and 32 competitive totals agree with LFC’s league-title history and official 30-goal article.
