Season overview
Liverpool began as league champions and added the Charity Shield with a 1–0 win over Everton at Goodison Park. Roger Hunt supplied the goal. Most of the side that had delivered the 1966 title remained in place, with Ron Yeats, Tommy Smith and Tommy Lawrence at its centre and Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson regulars on the wings.
The defence of the championship lasted well into the spring. Liverpool were still top after beating Stoke City on 4 March, but won only two of their final eleven league matches and finished fifth, nine points behind Manchester United. Hunt remained the leading scorer with 19 goals across all competitive matches, including the Shield. Liverpool scored 64 league goals in total.
Europe brought a much harsher assessment. Liverpool needed a third match in Brussels to overcome Petrolul Ploiești in the opening round of the European Cup. Ajax then won the first leg in Amsterdam 5–1; a 2–2 draw at Anfield left Liverpool out by 7–3 on aggregate. The FA Cup ended with another visit to Goodison Park, where Everton won the fifth-round tie 1–0 in March.
Bill Shankly had begun to add younger players without yet dismantling his established team. Emlyn Hughes arrived from Blackpool for £65,000 in February and made his debut in the March win over Stoke. Peter Wall, signed from Wrexham in October, was still waiting for his chance, while Dave Wilson’s move from Preston produced only one first-team appearance. Gordon Milne left for Blackpool in May. The season therefore combined a fading title challenge with the first changes to the group that had brought Liverpool back to the top.
