The first all-Merseyside cup final ended without a goal at Wembley on 25 March 1984. Liverpool and Everton played 120 minutes before a crowd of 100,000, but the League Cup would have to be decided in a replay at Maine Road three days later.

Joe Fagan retained Liverpool's starting eleven from the 4–1 European Cup victory at Benfica. Against Howard Kendall's Everton, they found no such route to goal.

The major first-half dispute came at the other end. Adrian Heath reached a loose ball ahead of Bruce Grobbelaar and sent it towards goal. Alan Hansen blocked on the line, prompting Everton's appeal for handball. Referee Alan Robinson allowed play to continue.

Liverpool threatened as the game developed. Alan Kennedy carried the ball forward on a run through Everton's defence, but his shot went narrowly wide. Neither side could establish a lead, and the match went into extra time.

Michael Robinson replaced Craig Johnston at the start of the additional half-hour. Everton had already brought Alan Harper on for Kevin Sheedy. Neither change produced a winner.

The occasion had an expression of unity beyond the result: the teams made a joint lap of honour, while both sets of supporters chanted “Merseyside”.
