Graeme Souness scored the only goal as Liverpool beat Everton at Maine Road on 28 March 1984 to win a fourth successive League Cup. The replay settled the first all-Merseyside cup final and delivered Joe Fagan's first trophy as Liverpool manager.
Three days earlier, the sides had played out a goalless draw after extra time at Wembley. Fagan retained his starting eleven; Everton began with Alan Harper in place of Kevin Sheedy. The replay drew 52,089 spectators to Manchester City's ground.
Souness made the difference just over twenty minutes into another close match. Receiving Phil Neal's pass outside the penalty area, the captain struck left-footed past Neville Southall. He later recalled that his first touch had been a miscontrol: the shot which won the cup came from an improvised response.
Liverpool kept that lead for the rest of the evening. Howard Kendall sent Andy King on for Alan Irvine, while Fagan left his substitute, Michael Robinson, unused.
The previous three League Cups had been won under Bob Paisley. Fagan's side had now extended that sequence, becoming the first club to win the competition four years running.
