Liverpool went top of the First Division with a 3–0 win over Everton at Anfield on 6 November 1983. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Michael Robinson and Steve Nicol adding second-half goals in front of 40,875 spectators.
Joe Fagan retained the eleven who had won at Athletic Bilbao four days earlier. Rush had scored the only goal in Spain, following his five against Luton Town in Liverpool's previous league match.
He put Liverpool ahead during the opening twenty minutes of the derby. That remained the only goal of the first half, leaving Everton within reach at the interval.
Robinson doubled the lead on the hour. Nicol supplied the third late in the game, with Mark Lawrenson credited with the assist. It was Liverpool's fourth successive league victory.
Liverpool finished with 26 points from twelve matches, one ahead of Manchester United. Everton were seventeenth with fifteen points and only seven league goals.
