Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as Liverpool beat Everton 4–1 at Goodison Park on 30 September 1986, winning the Football League Super Cup 7–2 on aggregate. His three goals followed two in the first leg at Anfield a fortnight earlier.
Everton had opportunities to reduce that deficit before Liverpool scored. Instead, after ten minutes, Steve McMahon's pass sent John Wark beyond the defence. Kevin Ratcliffe checked Wark's progress, but the ball broke to Rush, who placed his shot beneath Bobby Mimms.
Bruce Grobbelaar then diverted Kevin Sheedy's close-range effort against the underside of the bar. Liverpool followed that escape with a second goal before the half-hour: Jan Mølby's through pass released Rush, who drew Mimms before finishing.
Everton went into the interval 5–1 behind on aggregate. Their chance to recover diminished further early in the second half when Trevor Steven missed a penalty awarded for Jim Beglin's challenge on Graeme Sharp. Steve Nicol's volley soon made it 3–0 on the night.
Mølby again supplied Rush for his third goal in the closing minutes. Sharp converted Everton's second penalty shortly afterwards, but it made little difference to the outcome. Liverpool completed the victory before 26,068 spectators.
The final concluded a competition begun in 1985–86 for the six English clubs excluded from Europe after Heysel. Held over into the following season and sponsored by Screen Sport, it proved to be the tournament's only edition.
