Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick and created both Ian Rush goals as Liverpool beat Norwich City 6–2 at Anfield on 1 November 1986. Kenny Dalglish began on the bench, leaving the two strikers to lead an attack which built a five-goal advantage before Norwich replied.
Jan Mølby's passing helped establish Liverpool's first-half lead. After 15 minutes he released Steve Nicol, who ran clear to beat Graham Benstead. Another long pass found Walsh, who turned past a defender and scored Liverpool's second before the interval.
Walsh then became the provider, driving a low cross for Rush to turn in at the near post shortly after the restart. Alan Hansen's delivery following a corner gave Walsh the chance to score again, and he subsequently supplied Rush for the fifth.
Norwich pulled a goal back through Mike Phelan before Walsh completed his hat-trick after 75 minutes. David Hodgson added their second late on.
Dalglish made his 500th Liverpool appearance when he replaced Nicol in the second half. His team finished the day third in the First Division, one place above Norwich.
