Season overview
Jürgen Klopp’s final season brought the League Cup and third place in the Premier League with 82 points. He announced in January that he would leave at the end of the campaign. Virgil van Dijk scored the extra-time winner as Liverpool beat Chelsea 1–0 in the League Cup final.
Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch joined a midfield that lost Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. Mohamed Salah was the leading scorer with 25 competitive goals, followed by Darwin Núñez on 18 and Cody Gakpo on 16.
April league defeats by Crystal Palace and Everton preceded the third-place finish. Atalanta eliminated Liverpool from the Europa League quarter-finals, winning 3–1 on aggregate, while Manchester United won the FA Cup quarter-final 4–3. Klopp’s last match was a 2–0 home victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
