Season overview

Liverpool finished fifth with 67 points. A 9–0 league win over Bournemouth and a 7–0 victory against Manchester United came in a campaign that also brought nine league defeats. Seven successive wins late in the season were followed by draws with Aston Villa and Southampton, leaving Liverpool outside the Champions League places.

The season began with a 3–1 Community Shield victory over Manchester City. Both domestic cup defences ended in the fourth round, against City in the League Cup and Brighton in the FA Cup. Real Madrid again ended Liverpool’s Champions League campaign, winning 6–2 on aggregate in the last 16.

Sadio Mané left for Bayern Munich, Darwin Núñez arrived from Benfica and Cody Gakpo joined from PSV in January. Mohamed Salah led the scoring with 30 competitive goals. Roberto Firmino and James Milner said farewell at the end of the campaign.
