Season overview

Liverpool won their sixth European Cup, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2–0 in Madrid on 1 June with goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi. The semi-final had required a 4–0 Anfield victory to overturn Barcelona’s 3–0 first-leg lead. Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice each to send Jürgen Klopp’s side into a second successive final.

The Premier League campaign ended with 97 points, one behind Manchester City. Liverpool won 30 matches, drew seven and lost only once, away to City in January. Salah and Sadio Mané shared the league’s Golden Boot with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 22 goals apiece; Salah led Liverpool’s overall scoring with 27.

Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri were the summer arrivals. Liverpool conceded 22 league goals, compared with 38 the previous season. Both domestic cup campaigns ended in the third round, against Chelsea in the League Cup and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup.
