Season overview
Liverpool ended their 30-year wait for a league title, finishing with a club-record 99 points, 18 ahead of Manchester City. Jürgen Klopp’s side won 32 league games and lost three. The campaign was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the title was secured in June after football resumed. Mohamed Salah finished as the leading scorer with 23 competitive goals.
Two international trophies preceded the league title. Liverpool beat Chelsea on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup, then won the Club World Cup for the first time. Roberto Firmino scored the winner against Monterrey in the semi-final and the extra-time goal that beat Flamengo 1–0 in the final.
Atlético Madrid ended the Champions League defence in the last 16. Chelsea knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the fifth round, while Aston Villa won the League Cup quarter-final 5–0. Manchester City had won the Community Shield on penalties.
