Season overview
Liverpool finished fourth in Jürgen Klopp’s first full season, collecting 76 points and securing a return to the Champions League with a 3–0 final-day win over Middlesbrough. Sadio Mané, Georginio Wijnaldum and Joël Matip joined the squad, while James Milner spent the campaign predominantly at left-back. Philippe Coutinho led the scoring with 14 competitive goals; he and Mané each scored 13 in the league.
The expanded Main Stand welcomed supporters for the 4–1 home win over Leicester in September. Liverpool scored 78 league goals across the season, but their domestic cup runs both ended in January: Southampton won each leg of the League Cup semi-final 1–0, and Wolverhampton Wanderers won 2–1 at Anfield in the FA Cup fourth round. There was no European campaign that season.
