Season overview
Jürgen Klopp replaced Brendan Rodgers in October, and Liverpool finished eighth in the Premier League with 60 points. Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Nathaniel Clyne were among the summer recruits, while Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling departed. Daniel Sturridge was the leading scorer with 13 competitive goals.
Two cup runs ended in final defeats. Manchester City won the League Cup on penalties after a 1–1 draw at Wembley. In Europe, Liverpool eliminated Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund and Villarreal before losing 3–1 to Sevilla in Basel, despite Sturridge giving them the lead. The Dortmund quarter-final brought a 4–3 Anfield win from 3–1 down, settled by Dejan Lovren’s added-time winner. West Ham ended the FA Cup run in a fourth-round replay.
On 26 April 2016, the new Hillsborough inquests returned verdicts of unlawful killing, following the campaign by bereaved families and survivors.
