Season overview

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League with 76 points and reached the Champions League semi-final. Fernando Torres arrived from Atlético Madrid and scored 33 competitive goals, including 24 in the league. He was the first Liverpool player since Robbie Fowler in 1996–97 to reach 30 goals in a season.

After taking one point from their first three Champions League group matches, Liverpool won the next three, including an 8–0 victory over Beşiktaş at Anfield. They then beat Internazionale and Arsenal before Chelsea won the semi-final 4–3 on aggregate. The home quarter-final against Arsenal finished 4–2 to Liverpool.

Yossi Benayoun, Ryan Babel and Lucas Leiva also joined, with Martin Škrtel arriving in January. A permanent deal was completed for Javier Mascherano during the season. Barnsley knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the fifth round, while Chelsea ended their League Cup run in the quarter-final. Liverpool finished without a trophy.

Notes on the record

Overview evidence: paragraph 1 — rsssf-league, lfch-games, lfch-scorers and lfc-torres; paragraph 2 — lfch-games and lfc-benitez; paragraph 3 — lfch-transfers, lfc-mascherano and lfch-games.

Torres’s 33 is his competitive total; 24 is his league total. No enduring record claim is made about either his debut goals or the Beşiktaş score.

Mascherano’s permanent deal is stated in the overview, with the initial loan separately recorded in 2006–07. The permanent ledger names rights holders rather than a selling club; no fictitious club is entered.

The ledger contains an Ayala date in September 2009 under this season. It is not copied. Lucas’s May 2007 signing is allocated here as preparation for his first Liverpool campaign. No unverified ownership motives or transfer fees are included.
