Season overview
Liverpool reached another Champions League final under Rafael Benítez, but AC Milan won 2–1 in Athens. The route included a 2–1 away win over Barcelona and a penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea in the semi-final. Liverpool finished third in the Premier League with 68 points, ahead of Arsenal on goal difference.
Peter Crouch led the scoring with 18 competitive goals, including the winner in the 2–1 Community Shield victory over Chelsea. Dirk Kuyt, Craig Bellamy and Jermaine Pennant joined in the summer, followed by Álvaro Arbeloa and the loan arrival of Javier Mascherano during the second half of the campaign.
Arsenal ended both domestic cup runs at Anfield in January, winning 3–1 in the FA Cup third round and 6–3 in the League Cup quarter-final. Off the pitch, Liverpool agreed a takeover by George Gillett and Tom Hicks in February.

Mascherano’s initial deal was a loan. The club profile refers to January and the ledger records 20 February; the summary avoids conflating the agreement with registration and gives only the part of the season.
The Community Shield is included, despite retrospective descriptions of the campaign as trophyless. No judgement about the Chelsea goal-line decision from 2005 or the ownership deal’s finances is made.
