Season overview
Liverpool finished second in the Premier League with 86 points, four behind Manchester United. They lost only twice and scored 77 league goals, the division’s highest total, but drew 11 matches. Rafael Benítez’s side beat both United and Chelsea home and away, including a 4–1 victory at Old Trafford in March.
Steven Gerrard led the scoring with 24 competitive goals and won the football writers’ Player of the Year award. Liverpool beat Real Madrid 5–0 on aggregate in the Champions League round of 16, but Chelsea ended their European run in the quarter-final: a 4–4 draw at Stamford Bridge followed a 3–1 home defeat.
Robbie Keane joined from Tottenham in July and returned there in February; Albert Riera also arrived, while Peter Crouch and John Arne Riise left. Everton knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in a fourth-round replay, and Tottenham ended their League Cup run. Liverpool won 10 of their final 11 league games but finished without a trophy.

Keane’s arrival and return are distinct permanent transfers in the same campaign. Hyypiä’s June 2009 departure and Pennant’s summer departure belong to 2009–10. The unavailable engpaul table URL is replaced with the retrieved RSSSF England 2008/09 record.
