Season overview
Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League with 67 points in Gérard Houllier’s first full season in sole charge. They conceded 30 league goals, down from 49 the previous season. A scoreless final five league matches left them two points behind third-placed Leeds United and outside the Champions League places.
Sami Hyypiä, Stéphane Henchoz, Sander Westerveld and Dietmar Hamann were among the summer arrivals. Steve McManaman left for Real Madrid on a free transfer, while David James moved to Aston Villa and Paul Ince to Middlesbrough. Emile Heskey joined from Leicester City in March.
Michael Owen was leading scorer with 12 competitive goals, followed by Titi Camara with 10. Blackburn Rovers won 1–0 at Anfield in the FA Cup fourth round, and Southampton ended Liverpool’s League Cup run in the third round. Liverpool’s final league match was a 1–0 defeat away to Bradford City.

Notes on the record
Overview evidence: paragraph 1 — rsssf-league, rsssf-prior-league, lfch-games and lfc-houllier (management and missed qualification only); paragraph 2 — lfch-transfers; paragraph 3 — lfch-scorers, lfc-owen and lfch-games.
The official Houllier profile says the final six fixtures were winless. Liverpool beat Wimbledon on 16 April, then failed to score in their last five league games. The dated fixtures establish the five-match run; the incorrect six-match claim is excluded.
McManaman’s summer 1999 departure is recorded here, separately from any earlier agreement. Preparatory May arrivals of Hyypiä and Šmicer and Jones’s May departure belong to this campaign.
