Season overview

Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League with 54 points during a season of managerial change. Gérard Houllier joined Roy Evans as joint manager in July, but Evans left on 12 November and Houllier took sole charge. Liverpool scored 68 league goals and conceded 49.

Michael Owen led the scoring with 23 competitive goals. His 18 league goals brought a second consecutive share of the Golden Boot, this time alongside Dwight Yorke and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. Steve Staunton returned from Aston Villa and Vegard Heggem arrived from Rosenborg. Steven Gerrard made his first-team debut as a substitute in the 2–0 home win over Blackburn Rovers on 29 November.

Tottenham won 3–1 at Anfield in the League Cup fourth round, two days before Evans’s departure. Manchester United eliminated Liverpool from the FA Cup in the fourth round, while Celta Vigo won their UEFA Cup third-round tie 4–1 on aggregate. Liverpool’s largest league win was a 7–1 home victory over Southampton in January.

Joint management and sole management are distinguished. The two-day interval is calculated from the dated Tottenham fixture and Evans’s departure. The Southampton result is compared with the complete league fixture list.

McManaman’s physical departure in summer 1999 belongs to 1999–2000. The Houllier profile compresses several departures into a general rebuilding narrative; dated transfer ledgers determine season allocation.
