Season overview

Liverpool won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup under Gérard Houllier, and finished third in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League. The first trophy came in February: after a 1–1 draw with Birmingham City in Cardiff, Liverpool won the League Cup final shoot-out 5–4.

Michael Owen scored twice late in the FA Cup final to overturn Arsenal’s lead and secure a 2–1 victory on 12 May. Four days later in Dortmund, Liverpool beat Alavés 5–4 after extra time in the UEFA Cup final, settled by Delfí Geli’s golden own goal. A 4–0 win at Charlton on the final league day secured third place with 69 points.

Owen led the scoring with 24 competitive goals, followed by Emile Heskey with 22. Summer arrivals included Gary McAllister, Markus Babbel and Nick Barmby. McAllister scored the late free-kick winner at Everton and the penalty that decided the UEFA Cup semi-final against Barcelona.

The treble belongs to 2000–01. The August 2001 Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup belong to 2001–02: five trophies in calendar 2001 does not mean five in this season. Shoot-out kicks are excluded from scoring totals.

The final was won by a golden own goal, not by a fifth named Liverpool scorer. No unverified fee, transfer motive or claim of a league title challenge is included.
