Liverpool lost their FA Cup semi-final replay 2–1 to Manchester United at Maine Road on 17 April 1985. Four days after twice finding late equalisers at Goodison Park, they took the lead themselves, only for Bryan Robson and Mark Hughes to overturn it after half-time.
Paul Walsh, whose last-minute goal had forced the replay, started alongside Kenny Dalglish. Ian Rush was absent, while Steve Nicol came in for Sammy Lee. United retained the same starting eleven.
Paul McGrath's own goal after 39 minutes put Liverpool ahead. That advantage survived until the interval, but Robson equalised soon after the restart, beating Bruce Grobbelaar with a drive from about 25 yards.
Hughes scored United's second around the hour. Liverpool appealed for offside, but the goal stood. Joe Fagan later sent on Gary Gillespie for Dalglish; his side could not find the reply which had twice rescued them in the first match.
United advanced to face Everton in the final. Liverpool's FA Cup campaign ended before 45,775 spectators at Manchester City's ground.
