Liverpool twice recovered from the brink of an FA Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester United at Goodison Park on 13 April 1985. Ronnie Whelan equalised with three minutes of normal time remaining; Paul Walsh made it 2–2 in the 119th minute, sending the tie to a replay.
Joe Fagan had retained the side which beat Panathinaikos 4–0 at Anfield three days earlier. This time Liverpool reached half-time without a goal, and Fagan introduced Walsh for John Wark just before the hour.
Bryan Robson put United ahead after 69 minutes. Their lead lasted until Whelan curled his equaliser past Gary Bailey, extending the afternoon by another half-hour.
Frank Stapleton restored United's advantage eight minutes into extra-time. Liverpool's second response came later still: Walsh finished at close range after Bailey saved Ian Rush's header. The substitute's goal brought the sides level again with barely any time left.
Neither club had secured its place at Wembley after two hours of football. They would meet again at Maine Road on 17 April, four days after the drawn match.
