Liverpool reached the European Cup quarter-finals despite losing 1–0 to Benfica in Lisbon on 7 November 1984. The 3–1 lead from Anfield was reduced almost immediately, and Kenny Dalglish and Benfica defender Pietra were both sent off before half-time.
On a pitch soaked by rain, Bruce Grobbelaar failed to hold the ball as Jorge Silva advanced, then brought him down. Michael Manniche converted the fifth-minute penalty. Benfica now needed only one more goal to qualify on away goals.
Grobbelaar soon prevented that second goal. Phil Neal's attempted pass was held up by surface water, giving Wando a shooting chance, but the goalkeeper recovered his position to tip the ball over.
The double dismissal followed a confrontation between Dalglish and Pietra just before the interval. Both sides played the second half with ten men. Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen held Liverpool's defence together, while Grobbelaar recovered a Silva header after letting it slip towards his line.
Liverpool almost equalised late on when Ian Rush beat Bento but struck a post. The miss left them protecting a narrow aggregate lead to the end. They held it, advancing 3–2 over the two legs.
