Liverpool turned a one-goal advantage into a 5–1 aggregate victory by beating Benfica 4–1 in Lisbon on 21 March 1984. Ronnie Whelan scored twice, with Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also on target, as Joe Fagan's side reached the European Cup semi-finals.
Kenny Dalglish supplied three of the goals.
The first goal came inside ten minutes. Sammy Lee exchanged passes with Phil Neal at a short corner, then crossed for Whelan. The midfielder headed down towards Bento, who let the ball escape into the net.
Johnston made an important contribution at both ends. He cleared off the line after a misdirected Mark Lawrenson header, then scored Liverpool's second shortly after the half-hour. Dalglish exchanged passes with Rush and found Johnston, who beat Bento to establish a 2–0 half-time lead.
Benfica needed four goals to go through. They pulled one back in the 74th minute when Nené headed in, but Rush answered five minutes later, heading Dalglish's cross home at the far post.
Whelan completed the scoring late on. Again Dalglish provided the pass; Whelan went inside his marker and finished from a narrow angle.
