Ian Rush scored five times as Liverpool beat Luton Town 6–0 at Anfield on 29 October 1983. He completed his hat-trick before half-time, with Kenny Dalglish adding the other goal, then scored twice more after the interval.
Luton were two down inside five minutes. Rush put away a loose ball from close range to open the scoring, then followed up after Graeme Souness's header struck the bar.
His third came from a different kind of finish. Steve Nicol reached the byline on the left and crossed for Rush to head in after 36 minutes. Two minutes later Dalglish's low shot escaped Les Sealey to make it 4–0.
Rush's fourth, ten minutes into the second half, was a first-time volley from Alan Kennedy's long ball. He completed his five with two minutes remaining, reacting after Sealey blocked Souness's close-range effort.
The victory, watched by 31,940, put Rush alongside John Miller, Andy McGuigan and John Evans as the fourth Liverpool player to score five in a match.
