Terry McDermott's fifth-minute goal gave Liverpool a 1–0 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie on 22 October 1980. Against Alex Ferguson's Scottish champions, Liverpool established an early lead and kept it through the first leg of their European Cup second-round tie.
The goal began with Ray Kennedy intercepting a pass from Willie Miller. Kenny Dalglish then played the ball inside, where McDermott let it run to David Johnson and continued his own run. Johnson's return found him in the inside-left channel, and McDermott chipped Jim Leighton from a narrow angle.
Aberdeen had John McMaster off the field with a nose injury when Liverpool scored. His difficulties continued: a knee injury forced his replacement by Doug Bell in the 15th minute.
Ray Clemence preserved the lead with a full-length save from Mark McGhee around the half-hour. At the other end, Leighton stopped Alan Hansen after the Liverpool defender went through from Dalglish's pass.
In the second half Liverpool brought more men behind the ball, conceding midfield space while protecting their defence. Jimmy Case replaced Sammy Lee in the 68th minute. The score did not change.
The crowd of 24,000 saw Aberdeen lose the home leg in their first European Cup campaign. For Liverpool, McDermott's carefully worked finish had secured both an away goal and a lead to take to Anfield on 5 November.
