Terry McDermott's first-half goal gave Liverpool a 1–0 victory over West Ham United in the Charity Shield at Wembley on 9 August 1980. The league champions retained the trophy they had won against Arsenal a year earlier.
West Ham arrived as FA Cup holders. Against them, Liverpool fielded an established side, with Kenny Dalglish and David Johnson in attack and McDermott joining Graeme Souness, Ray Kennedy and Jimmy Case in midfield.
The decisive opening came when Phil Parkes failed to hold a shot from Alan Kennedy. McDermott collected the loose ball and scored, giving Liverpool an advantage they protected for the rest of the afternoon.
West Ham's own programme the following week acknowledged how few opportunities their side had created against Liverpool's defence. It also noted that Liverpool had wasted chances through inaccurate shooting, allowing the contest to remain close despite their lead.
West Ham sent on Nicky Morgan for Geoff Pike in the second half and came close to an equaliser near the end. But McDermott's goal remained the only one before a crowd of 90,000.
